FANTASTIC PARTY AT THE HOME OF JEANNETTE FISCHER

Despite the downpour that engulfed St. Tammany the weekend of September 30th, our hopes were not diminished for a successful first "Envision Our Library" event at the beautiful home of Jeannette Fisher in Old Mandevillle.  Our hopes were fulfilled, for the rain ceased in time for a wonderful party at a beautiful home.

The hors d'ourves were absolutely splendid.  Jeannette was asked to share her outstanding recipe for a cheese plates with our Charter members and other library users.  With the graciousness that she showed during the entire event, she was happy to do so.  Here it is!  Save it and make a hit serving it to your relatives and friends this Holiday Season.

1.  Wash strawberries with the stems for decoration and arrange around Havarty cheese slice in squares arranged on a platter.
2.  Roast coarsely chopped pecans in a 375 degree over for 7-9 minutes.
3.  Sprinkle the roasted pecans on the Haverty cheese slices on the platter.
4.  Mix half and half brown sugar and butter for a praline topping.
5.  Cook the sugar mixture in a sauce pan till it gets ready hot and bubbly and then cook the mixture for another 4 to 5 minutes. Be sure the praline topping is not thin.  It should be slightly thick . Add a little evaporated milk  or cream to the mixture to give it the right consistency.
6.  Continue to cook long enough for it to start to candy but not too thick.
7.  Pour into a heat proof container and refrigerate it until it is ready to use, or let it cool just a bit so that the cheese over which you will pour the praline sauce does not completely melt.
8.  If you refrigerate before use, heat in the microwave long enough for it to be very warm, just before it bubbles.  Then stir and pour the warmed topping over the cheese, strawberries and nuts.
9.  Serve with thinly slice french baquettes.

BOARD ELECTS NEW OFFICERS AND SCHEDULES GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

THE ST. TAMMANY LIBRARY FOUNDATION SCHEDULES ITS ANNUAL MEETING AND   ELECTS ITS 2012-2013 OFFICERS

The St. Tammany Library Foundation will hold its annual meeting of its members on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at the meeting room of the Covington Branch.

Th  The St. Tammany Library Foundation was established in 2006, shortly after Hurricane Katrina devastated ed the Gulf Coast area.  One of our community library was severely damaged by water and it could no longer function as a library facility.  Another was completely destroyed by tornado force winds.

The St. Tammany Foundation was founded as a charitable non-profit 501 [c] 3 corporation to support the St. Tammany Public Library System in its recovery and to promote the long-range growth and development of library resources and services in the future.

  Now that a new Library is under construction to replace one of the facilities destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, the Foundation has become re-energized to focus on its broader mission.  The Foundation seeks build private support, to enhance the visibility of the role of the St. Tammany Library in the community, and to strengthen the public's support of our library system.

A volunteer community board directs the St. Tammany Library Foundation. The Board of Directors work closely with the Library staff to identify funding needs. The Foundation is separate from the Friends of the Library, although a member from the Friends sits on the Board of the Foundation.

FIRST OF MANY MEMBERSHIP EVENTS SCHEDULED

The St. Tammany Library Foundation is gearing up to celebrate our parish library and to initiate an extensive charter membership drive across the parish.  To introduce the role of a library foundation to citizens of the St. Tammany Parish community, the Foundation host a number of parish-wide socials throughout the fall months.

The first is scheduled for  Sunday, September 30th at the lovely home of Jeannette Fischer in Mandeville.  Wine, cheese and hors d'oeuvres will set the tone for a convivial celebration of  literacy,  reading, and inquiry - all available in a variety of formats - for citizens of all ages  in our parish.

NEA GRANT AWARDED TO ST. TAMMANY PARISH LIBRARY

NEA GRANT AWARDED TO THE ST. TAMMANY PARISH LIBRARY

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) chose only 78 organizations to
participate in THE BIG READ initiative, and the Louisiana Endowment for the
Humanities selected the St. Tammany Parish Library as one of three Louisiana
library systems to participate. This is a competitive grant and we are proud to
announce that our library system was chosen to participate.

The Big Read is designed to put reading at the center of our cultural experiences.
Our community will host a number of reading programs centered on the book, The
Things They Carried, by Tim O’Brien. Discussions, lectures, films, and performing
arts events will be part of the rich offerings of activities to accompany community
read-a-thons of the book.
